Today on What’s This Called? Ricardo Wang featured an interview with local artist Ilima Considine. In-Studio interview with Ilima Considine. However, Ricardo was suffering from a frog lodged inexplicably in his throat. So, at the last minute, I stepped up to the plate and offered my vocals for the purposes of helping interview, and feature, her band The Sexbots, with tracks from their new album, and some violin pieces from a zombie movie soundtrack that she recorded. Check out her website (liked above) for information about upcoming shows, and how you can get a copy of her new album,Don’t Stop. While I always feel a little strange filling in for The Wang, he was there the whole time helping guide the show, and this is very much a WTC? show in every form.

Wednesday morning at 10:15 AM I lost my best friend, my partner, the mother of my beloved son, and the light of the last decade of my life. Deanne McAdams was also a very talented experimental/post-punk musician who while never interested in any sort of fame (in fact quite the opposite) leaves an admirable, if all too short, body of work. Her contributions to The Dead Air Fresheners are purely vocal (in the tracks represented) and are actually poems I wrote for her, while the Leopards tracks are all her on all of the instruments.

Shows that play the kind of music you hear on What’s This Called? are rare even on college and community stations (and non-existent anywhere else). When a station has one it’s usually on at 3 AM sometime in the middle of the week.

NOT at KPSU though. For 6 years running, KPSU has been bold enough to let me doWhat’s This Called? on Saturdays at Noon Pacific Time, a slot most community station fill with the likes of Car Talk, bluegrass music, and Prairie Home Companion. Even in other time zones WTC is still on earlier than experimental music shows ever get to be (8 PM in merry old England for instance!) In broad daylight you get to hear the likes of Merzbow, Crank Sturgeon, John Cage, Sun Ra, Sun City Girls, and Marlo Eggplant, something unheard of practically anywhere else in the world. Nothing assures this continue more than when you pledge support to KPSU during or on behalf of What’s This Called?
